A harmonic is a musical note played by preventing or amplifying vibrations of the guitar string.

Using harmonics allows you to reach very high pitched notes that are difficult or impossible to reach by fretting. Guitar harmonics also produce a different sound quality and that gives a variety to your style of playing. The following are some variations of harmonics.

Pinch harmonic

Here’s how to play a pinch harmonic.

1.       Press down a fret on a string(try the 7th fret)

2.       Hold your pick close to its end but practice with every position to
          do a pinch harmonic.

3.       Pick the string which you place your fretting hand finger

4.       Touch the node on the string with the side of your thumb lightly and fast.

5.       Remove your finger from the string immediately after you get the sound

*Tip:Having some distortion would greatly help with the pinch harmonic and bending the string would give a great sound.

Fingerpick harmonics

1.       Press down a fret on a string(try the 7th fret)

2.       Touch the string lightly with the tip your index finger.

3.       Pick the string with your third(ring)finger with the same hand.

4.       For a better sound, remove your index finger after the note is played.

          Tapped harmonics

1.       Press down a fret on a string(try the 7th fret)

2.       Pick the string

3.       Tap and let go of the fret you want very quickly. You can use either your index
          or middle finger for tapping.

Harmonics are very important to lead guitarists as they give them a different style or even a signature to their playing. However, this is an advanced technique and only with proper understanding of the scales and techniques that a guitarist will be able to fully utilize the strengths of using harmonics.
